Getting Treibball Ready!
Congratulations on booking your Treibball session/course! Here is the process of teaching the 'touch' command to your dog to get you started prior to class as there's a lot to cover! Aim to do this at little intervals during the day and your dog should pick it up quite quickly!
To teach your dog the "touch" command, start by presenting your hand with a treat or a desirable scent, and reward your dog when they touch your hand with their nose .Gradually increase the distance and hand positions as your dog understands, and introduce the verbal cue "touch".
-
1.Preparation:
- Find a quiet, distraction-free area to train.
- Have high-value treats or a toy your dog loves.
- Decide on a marker word (like "yes") and a verbal cue ("touch").
-
2.Introduce the Target:
- Hold your hand out, palm facing your dog, possibly with a treat or a scent on it.
- If your dog is hesitant, you can place a treat between your fingers to encourage investigation.
- As soon as your dog sniffs or touches your hand, say your marker word ("yes") and give the reward.
-
3.Shape the Behavior:
- Repeat the process, gradually phasing out the treat in your hand.
- Start moving your hand slightly to encourage your dog to follow the target.
- Increase the difficulty by moving your hand higher, lower, or to different positions.
-
4.Introduce the Verbal Cue:
- Once your dog consistently touches your hand, introduce the verbal cue "touch" right before presenting your hand.
- Continue rewarding successful touches with the verbal cue.
-
5.Generalize the Behavior:
- Practice in different locations and with varying levels of distraction.
- Gradually increase the distance and the complexity of the movements.
Important Considerations:
- Be patient and positive: If your dog is struggling, go back to an easier step.
- Avoid pushing your dog's face: This can create negative associations.
- End each session with success: This helps keep your dog motivated.
- Use "touch" as a foundation for other tricks: It can be used to guide your dog into different positions or movements.
